The four major characteristics of a gourmet coffee can be described as: Aroma, Flavour, Acidity and Body.

For you guide we have used the following scale to indicate what to expect:

  • Light
  • Light to medium
  • Average
  • Fairly Heavy
  • Heavy

Choosing the right coffee for you is like choosing the right pair of gloves, it is about the perfect fit, our advise is experiment until you find that one right product, that perfect fit, that one single coffee that explodes in the mouth and brings you that ultimate pleasure. Its much like wine, price does not always mean satisfaction, it is about preference, what suits you.

We at Peacock strive to be honest with you, and therefore we would offer one word of caution. Coffee is an agriculture product, seasons change, growing conditions change from year to year, therefore no two crops of the same coffee is ever the same, what is right for you this year is not necessary right for you next year, so experiment you are never to old to learn.

Ethiopia
Legend traces the discovery of this extraordinarily delicious beverage crop to the third century by a young goat herder in Kaffa. The boy was astonished by the strange moods and frisky manners exhibited by his animals after nibbling the red cherries growing wild on evergreen shrubs. Curious as he was, the goat herder himself was tempted to taste the berries and he too experienced a feeling of delight warmth and elated spirit. Thus begins the extra-ordinary and legendary coffee culture in its botanical home, Ethiopia.

The first wild coffee beans from Kaffa reached Arabia where it acquired its present label, ” Coffee Arabica.” Arabica coffee, the only species produced in Ethiopia, gradually spread to the rest of the world (Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, the Far East, Europe and later the Americas) by nomadic tribesmen, travellers and, most importantly by traders and merchants. Today, consumed all over the world, coffee has indeed greatly influenced both oriental and occidental cultures.

Coffee combines valuable qualities as medicine, food and beverage. But the stimulating and spirit-alleviating effects of coffee to all that sip it is its universal distinguishing characteristic. In addition to this, coffee drinking has long been adored with special ceremonial values in Ethiopia. In fact it has even gone to the extreme of being associated with the invocation and calming of special spiritual powers as to be treated in daily ritual manners within family members, relatives and among close neighbours. Thus prayers are said, the aroma of the steaming smoke is inhaled and sometimes the roasted beans are chewed on the occasion.

However, our AA Kenyan is a fine example of what used to be more widely available.

In recent years some of these stations have been privatised allowing a growth of independent marketers, and thus a higher quality coffee has become available.
